French farmers -- plus wives -- pose nude for charity

PARTHENAY, France (AFP) - Twelve farmers from western France and six of their wives have posed in the nude for a charity calendar, claiming to "be fed up to the backteeth with being taken for a load of bumpkins."

"Just because you're a farmer's wife doesn't mean you're a farmer. Of the six women who are on display, there's a vet, some nurses and a beauty-parlour manager," said Patrice Boinot, a 35-year-old cattle farmer.

"This has allowed us to get rid of certain prejudices which some people still have about farmers' wives," said photographer Daniel Mar.

Anti-fur protesters bare all in central Paris

PARIS (AFP) - Anti-fur protesters bared all in central Paris Tuesday to draw attention to the use of animal skins by designers in this week's fashion shows.

Four demonstrators from the group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) appeared naked in the Place du Palais Royal, with their bodies painted to represent animals.

"We have chosen Paris fashion week in order to highlight the issue to the public. We want to remind people that animals continue to suffer ... as they await their cruel and inevitable fate," said Noemie Ventura of PETA France.

"Designers like Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren refuse to use furs. It is high time that others follow their lead and bring this violent industry to an end," she said.
